CNF (Confirmed): Full reserved berth allocated. RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation): Guaranteed boarding rights with a shared side-lower berth that often upgrades to confirmed before chart preparation. GNWL (General Waitlist): Ticket is waitlisted with the highest confirmation priority as confirmed travelers cancel.
The first reservation chart is typically prepared 4 hours before the train scheduled departure from the originating station. For early morning trains departing before 12:00 PM, the first chart is prepared at 8:00 PM on the previous evening. The second and final chart is prepared 30 minutes before departure.
If an online e-ticket bought via IRCTC remains fully on the waiting list (WL) after final chart preparation, it is automatically cancelled by the railway reservation system. Passengers are not permitted to board the train with an unconfirmed e-ticket. The full fare is automatically refunded back to your bank account within 3 to 5 business days.

The 10-digit Passenger Name Record (PNR) is the unique identifier for every booking made through Indian Railways and IRCTC. Whether booking at computerized reservation counters (PRS) or through the IRCTC web portal, your 10-digit PNR contains all vital journey parameters: train number, passenger names, coach class, quota, and travel dates.
Important Travel Advisory: Passengers traveling with RAC tickets are legally permitted to board the train and occupy their assigned sitting berth. The Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE) will allocate vacant berths to RAC passengers in sequential order if any confirmed passengers do not turn up.
Understanding Waitlist Types: GNWL vs RLWL vs PQWL vs TQWL
Indian Railways utilizes different waiting list quotas depending on where your journey originates and terminates:
GNWL (General Waitlist): Highest confirmation probability. Issued when boarding from the train originating station.
RLWL (Remote Location Waitlist): Issued for intermediate major stations. Confirms only when passengers booking from that specific quota cancel.
PQWL (Pooled Quota Waitlist): Shared across several small intermediate stations with limited confirmation probability.
TQWL (Tatkal Waitlist): Issued under the emergency Tatkal quota. Confirms strictly if other confirmed Tatkal passengers cancel.
